Summary[]

"What would happen if you discovered that your family was one of the most powerful in human history? What if you were told that the source of the family's power was hidden around the world in the form of 39 clues? What if you were given a choice -take a million dollars and walk away... or get the first Clue? If you're Amy and Dan you take the Clue- and begin a very dangerous race."

The Maze of Bones is the first book in The 39 Clues series. The book was released on September 9, 2008, and is by Rick Riordan. The book introduces orphans Amy and Dan Cahill, two of the main characters, and the Hunt for the clues itself, which was planned out by Grace Cahill, their grandmother. Grace, on her deathbed, asks her lawyer, William McIntyre, to switch to her alternate will which instigated the Hunt. William knew it was risky, as did Grace, and she admitted that if Amy and Dan didn't succeed 500 years of work would be for nothing. She signs the will and dies soon after.

At the funeral, Amy and Dan run into their relatives, first the Holts and then the Kabras. After the funeral service, William announces that some of the guests will find a gold invitation card in their programs. Fights broke out, each family wanting to be there for the reading. (And probably to get some inheritance.)

Among the few selected were Amy and Dan, the Kabras, the Holts, Aunt Beatrice, Cousin Ingrid, Uncle Jose, Alistair Oh, the Starlings, and Irina Spasky. The guests were allowed either a single clue or one million dollars. After some time, Amy and Dan finally choose to take the clue, thinking that was what Grace wanted. The Holts, the Kabras, Alistair and Irina pick the clue as well. The others take the million dollars and leave. They all receive an envelope that says "Resolution: The fine print to guess. Seek out Richard S____."

The title comes from the climax of the book, in which Amy and Dan travel into the catacombs of France, an underground mass grave.
